Teacher Shoutout! Tara Park

Since this week marks the end of a really crazy year where amidst pandemic challenges, our teachers have continued to shine, we want to first thank ALL teachers for ALL that you do every day and especially over the last few months! We hope that you are able to rest, relax, and rejuvenate this summer!

Tara Park is a teacher at Northwestern High School. She wrote this about Miracle Park: “I have the opportunity to teach students with special needs each day. Not only do I share in the happiness and kindness that they exude, but I am able to see each of their individual talents and abilities. I am so excited that they will be able to share these talents and abilities with their community in an inclusive environment through Miracle Park. Thank you to everyone that has been part of helping to create this park.”

Tara excels at creating a classroom environment that welcomes her students and both nurtured and challenges them daily. She also sponsors the Trojan Buddies program which pairs her students with typically developing peers. The buddies come come hang out during free periods and lunch and get to go on field trips together. Tara exudes the inclusive spirit of Miracle Park! Thank YOU, Tara, all of your students, and the Trojan buddies for being our why! ☺️

Sponsor: The Tuttle Family

Skip Tuttle is excited about the opportunities this park brings to all, Skip states on behalf of their family, "This is  such a meaningful addition to Rock Hill’s first class park system.   As a brother of a special needs child, I recognize the multiple ways this park will serve so many individuals and families. The combination of activities designed for those with special needs, coupled with caring volunteers, is such a blessing for those among us that will benefit in so many ways by competing successfully, and enjoying activities that they can excel in.  We consider it an honor to support this much needed facility in our community!"

Sponsor: Founders Federal Credit Union

Bruce Brumfield, President/CEO of Founders Federal Credit Union shares his personal story that played a part in why they are a major donor to the Miracle Park!

"At Founders Federal Credit Union, our mission is to serve. To serve our members and to serve our communities. So, when we heard about this dream to build a park in Rock Hill that would change the landscape for people with disabilities, while embracing those of all abilities, we knew we not only had to support it, we had to be on the forefront.

Our board of directors quickly gave us approval to do just that with a half million-dollar donation to help make Miracle Park a reality.

If you think about it, we all likely know someone or know of someone with a disability, who had a child with a disability, a parent with a disability, a friend with a disability. For many, this isn’t as far removed as you might think. I know it isn’t for me.

On August 25, 2016, I fell off a ladder while exiting a deer stand and shattered both of my heels. The doctor told me there are 5 bones in the human body you don’t want to break and I broke 3 of those in each foot.

After surgeries on both feet that involved plates, pins and screws, I was confined to a wheelchair for the next 12 weeks, unable to put any weight on my feet at all.

My situation was temporary, so I, in no way, intend to liken this to what many people and families face when it comes to disabilities. However, it certainly opened my eyes to the challenges the world presents.

I was suddenly in a situation where I had to have a caregiver. My wife was suddenly in a position where she had to plan her day around me. Our doors had to be taken off hinges so I could be wheeled through a home I had easily navigated before.  Our sunroom was converted into my bedroom so I could have a hospital bed, a way to maneuver into a wheelchair, etc. Suddenly everything was such an EFFORT, such a thought process. The word accessible was not a word I thought of often. Now, it was EVERYTHING. Attending normal activities or special events with work, family and friends now involved transportation for me in my wheelchair, finding restaurants with tables that accommodated a wheelchair, hotel rooms that were accessible, seating that allowed for a wheelchair, figuring out how to navigate crowds and curbs and hills. Suddenly nothing was easy. And, I quickly found that few places were as “accessible” as they claimed.

Again, this was a temporary situation and by the end of that year, I was able to walk again. But the word accessible is no longer a word I don’t think about. My experience left me with an even greater respect for those with disabilities and the challenges they face every single day.

That’s why I am so proud that everyone at Founders was on board and ready to help make this park happen. Instead of having to adapt to what’s already there, to have a place that is built with you in mind, where you can engage and be a part of life without having to try and just make it work, well, that will be a miracle for many. Miracle Park is a game changer for, not only Rock Hill, but for surrounding communities as well. Families with children whose abilities are different, will want to live here. They will come here to be a part of a community that cared enough to dream of a place where people of all abilities are, not only considered, but celebrated."  - Bruce Brumfield

Funding is still needed!  Can you help us with the second half of building our park, we still need $4,000,000.  https://www.miracleparkrockhill.com/donations

PRT on what Miracle Park will look like once it's open...

PRT is a major part of the Miracle Park and will not only operate and maintain the park once it's built, but they have also financially supported it through their generous foundation!  A BIG thanks to PRT for making this dream become a reality!

The crack of a bat...the laughter of children...the screams of excitement...that’s what you will hear when you visit Rock Hill Miracle Park. Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism (PRT) is excited to see the construction happening at the park. Rock Hill PRT will program and maintain the park, and we look forward to welcoming families and children of all abilities to enjoy everything it will offer. The park will feature an inclusive playground, Miracle Fields with synthetic turf, multi‐purpose grass fields, a picnic and concession area and in the final phase, a retail operation for use by people of all abilities.

While visiting the park, you will see school groups and sports teams using the park. Families picnicking, playing, riding bikes and exercising. We anticipate a 2021 Spring Miracle League will be held at the park. Registration will begin in January of 2021. PRT youth sports and Special Olympic sports will be able to hold practices and games in the park. Exercise and leisure programs for any ability such as walking, yoga, playground games and more will be held. Miracle Park will be a regular site for PRT’s mobile recreation program REC in a Box. The summer will be a great time for camps to visit the park, and on weekends you will hear the cheer of the crowd at a game or enjoy a special event. For more information, feel free to contact Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism at 803‐329‐5620.

We look forward to seeing you there and all of the fun the park will bring. Don’t forget your peanuts and cracker jacks!!

Swings!

Let's talk swings!  We've already featured our Arch Swing, but keep reading to see some of the other swings that will be at Miracle Park.

The Expression Swing, a GameTime exclusive and the industry’s first playground swing that promotes intergenerational play as adults and children swing together. The face-to-face design features a bucket or toddler seat for children under five and a comfortable adult swing seat that allows a parent and child (or grandparent and grandchild) to interact with each other and experience one another’s facial expressions while at play.

  • See Eye to Eye - Face-to-face design positions adult and child at eye level with one another so they can interact
  • Swing in Comfort - Exclusive platform swing seat is ergonomically designed for adults and compliant with current swing safety standards
Zero-G Chair Swings
These swings allow children who require additional support to swing alongside their friends. This creates an inclusive environment of play parity where everyone can join in the fun. The Zero-G Chair is available for ages 2-5 and 5-12. We will have both sizes at Miracle Park.

  • Children with physical disabilities can experience movement apart from their mobility device
  • High back, wing support, wide base and molded adjustable harnes help the user maintain a neutral body position and minimize fatigue
  • Fully engages the senses and encourages interaction among caregivers and peers

Featured Future Athlete- Charlie

Hi! I'm Charlie.

I'm 5 years old and excited to start Kindergarten in the fall! An inclusive playground opened near my house awhile ago and it is my FAVORITE place on earth. I have Down syndrome and need a little help to do the same things my typical buddies get to enjoy. Because of this playground, I get to have fun alongside typical kids! I watch them and learn from them, and they are encouraged by me, too! One new friend gave me the courage to climb up a steep ladder for the very first time without any help from my mom! I used to be afraid of slides, but this inclusive place instantly gave me the confidence I needed! That's why Miracle Park is so important to me and my family. Nothing on this scale exists in our area today. Miracles really will happen here as kids and adults of all abilities learn and play together. I can't wait to see you there and give you a big high five!

Love,
Charlie
